What does it mean to be considered fat during a time when obesity is framed as a threat? When body fat is the enemy, how does the line between “acceptable” and “too fat” get defined as people make value judgments in the course of everyday life? Obesity has dominated popular media as one of the most pressing issues of the new millennium and is being blamed for rising health-care costs and a weakening of national security. Author Nicole Taylor explores how teens navigate the fraught realities of body image within a high school culture that reinforces widespread beliefs about body size as a matter of personal responsibility yet offers limited opportunities to exercise, and an over-abundance of junk food. Foregoing the voices of teens she interviewed in an Arizona school, along with the creative voices of New Mexico students represented on the website, Taylor reveals how teens develop shared understandings of fat and position themselves as relatively thin through teasing, gossip, and verbal dueling. Taylor also traces policy efforts to illustrate where the U.S. is as a nation in addressing childhood obesity, and offers practical strategies that can be used to promote teen wellness.

Dr. Taylor is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at Texas StateUniversity. Prior to working at Texas State, She served as the director of Scholar Programs at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Taylor holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Arizona.
