Scorching hot days with temperatures in the triple digits may be safely in our rearview but in Austin, the dog days of autumn are just getting started. The 9th Annual Dogtoberfest takes place Saturday, October 15th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the one, the only, The Domain. Lauded as Austin’s “Most Awesome-ist Pet Related Event,” Dogtoberfest brings dogs and their two-legged pals together to raise awareness for dog rescue, as well as generate crucial funds for local rescue operations. Still not convinced? Hang on, friend, because there’s a weiner dog race.

Dogtoberfest

Founders Julie Strong and Stan Parish have no full-time, paid staff to speak of. And yet, since 2008, Dogtoberfest has raised over $215,000 for its beneficiaries—clearly, the dedication and drive exhibited by Strong and Parish has inspired enough devotion to continuing to bring volunteers to their cause. The culmination of all that tough but rewarding work: Dogtoberfest. The event itself begins with DogtoberTROT, a 1k walk for two-legged and four-legged friends alike. Dogtoberfest begins immediately afterwards and boasts a smattering of fun activities.

Dogtoberfest’s annual Canine Costume Contest, sponsored by KXAN, is a staple of the event. With prizes for Best Ensemble, Best Human/Dog Duo, and Best in Show, the Canine Costume Contest is the only place you’re likely to find a pug Han Solo with a human Chewbacca. There are pet portraits sponsored by Tomlinson’s, raffling drawings, and a silent auction…but perhaps the main attractions of the event are the illustrious Weiner Dog Races. Watch dozens of adorable dachshunds dash for the finish line; I don’t care who you are, I defy you not to smile your head off. All these events and more will be held at The Domain, Austin’s premier shopping complex.

The Domain

Featuring over 100 upscale and mainstream retail stores and restaurants, The Domain is an elegant shopping centre that feels like a luxury park. The Banana Republic, Tiffany & Co., American Eagle Outfitters and Ralph Lauren are just a few of the major brands occupying Austin’s top destination for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Through their partnership with Dogtoberfest, The Domain provides a safe, fun and larger than life atmosphere befitting such a fun time and a wonderful cause.

Don’t miss your chance to “cute for a cause!” Support Austin dog rescue organizations’ efforts and marvel at the pluck and personality of our furry little friends. Be a part of Dogtoberfest Saturday, October 15th from 10-4 at The Domain
