Labor Day signifies many things to many people. It's an unofficial start to fall, the kick-off weekend for college football, and a great day to celebrate the accomplishments of the American worker.
The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival is a staple of Labor Day weekend in Austin. There are over 500 performers who take the stage during the seven-day showcase that culminates on Labor Day.
The varied assortment of improv, sketch, and standup performers make this the largest multi-disciplinary comedy festival in the South. An all-access pass to get into all the shows is $99, weekend passes are $45, and individual show passes are also available.
Labor Daze at Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In
Going to the drive-in is an experience that harkens back to a simpler time, and it might be the perfect way for you to spend your Labor Day. This intimate outdoor theater only takes 30 to 40 cars for each show, which ensures they provide a top-notch experience.
Friday through Sunday, Blue Starlite will have one showing of their annual Labor Day weekend feature, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They'll also have screenings of classic films like Back to the Future, The Big Lebowski, Kevin Smith's Mallratts, Valley Girl, Dazed and Confused, and Office Space.
The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. is celebrating their 5th anniversary in a big way from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the Sunday before Labor Day. They have two live music acts performing with their house band Little Mikey and The Soda Jerks taking the stage at 4 p.m. and Leo Rondeau performing at 6 p.m.
ABGB is the back-to-back winner of the Great American Beer Festival Brewpub of the Year, so you know they'll have a great list of beers on tap as well. As far as the eats go, they'll have their piping hot thin-crust pizza available, and no birthday is complete without cake!
Yoga studios across the country have embraced Labor Day as a time to show their local communities what yoga is all about. There are several studios in Austin that offer people of every age and skill level the opportunity to try their services for free.
The official kick-off class for F.D.O.Y. takes place at 8 a.m. at Umlauf Sculpture Gardens. Austin Yoga Tree, Yoga Yoga, and PURE Yoga are just a few of the other businesses that are participating throughout the day.
