On the high school front, Texas received some good news from an out-of-state priority recruit. Four-star Folsom (CA) defensive tackle Josiah Sharma announced he had narrowed his recruitment down to seven schools. The Longhorns were among those to survive the cut for Sharma, as they continue to remain in the mix for his services. Sharma’s official visit this summer will be his second trip to Austin this year after making an unofficial visit earlier in the spring. This will be an interesting recruitment to monitor given that proximity to home doesn’t appear to be an issue. Texas will have to overcome both Alabama and Washington having a leg up in this recruitment due to the fact they have more time invested from the aspect of a relationship. But the fact that Sharma visited earlier in the spring and immediately setup an official visit is definitely an encouraging sign if you are looking for data points.

For the six straight series, the Texas Longhorns dropped a weekend series opener. For the fourth time in those six series, head coach David Pierce’s team bounced back to final the final two games and take the series. By taking two of three games from the TCU Horned Frogs at UFCU Disch-Falk Field during “Made in Austin Weekend,” the Longhorns also recovered from Tuesday’s embarrassing 17-9 loss to the Vaqueros in Austin, the season’s second inexcusable loss in this up-and-down season for Texas. The bats failed to show up for the Longhorns on Friday to support right-hander Max Grubbs, who was excellent in 6.1 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs while tying his career high with five strikeouts. Grubbs allowed one of those runs on two doubles in the first inning, then held the Horned Frogs scoreless until the sixth inning, when a triple and a single drove in the second run for TCU. The Horned Frogs added some insurance with one run in the eighth inning against right-hander Andre Duplantier and two runs, one unearned, against left-hander David Shaw in the ninth inning to win 5-0. Texas didn’t record a hit until the fourth inning against left-handed TCU ace Payton Holle, who gave up four hits with two walks in seven innings, and only managed five for the whole game, two by third baseman Peyton Powell. Because the Horned Frogs were able to turn two double plays, the Longhorns only stranded four runners in the entire anemic performance in the batter’s box. Saturday’s 7-0 victory showed much more resolve by the home team, which won 7-0 with the help of a five-run second inning and a two-run third inning that accounted for all the runs scored in the entire game. During the decisive second inning, right fielder Will Gasparino, first baseman Casey Borba, shortstop Jalin Flores, and third baseman Peyton Powell each had RBI singles with Flores driving in two runs on his knock to left field. On the mound, left-hander Ace Whitehead and right-hander Cade O’Hara combined for the shutout with Whitehead allowing three hits over six innings and O’Hara allowing two hits over the final three innings. Whitehead is now 4-0 on the season with the Longhorns winning all five of his starts. With the series hanging in the balance on a beautiful, cool spring afternoon in Austin, Texas elbowed past TCU 2-1 in a game that felt like a weekend series opener except for the Horned Frogs using four pitchers. Right-hander Lebarron Johnson Jr. contributed to that Friday feel with his longest outing since pitching seven innings against Baylor a month ago, going 6.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Johnson continued to struggle some with his command with those four walks, a hit batter, and the lone run he allowed scoring on one of his two wild pitches, but he did stay around the zone enough to be effective. In relief, right-hander Gage Boehm pitched 2.2 innings for his fourth save, walking two batters but holding the Horned Frogs without a hit. All of the scoring came in the second inning when TCU took the lead on the wild pitch by Johnson before Texas led off the bottom of the inning with designated hitter Kimble Schuessler drawing a full count walk and advancing to second on a walk drawn by catcher Rylan Galvan.
