Into The Twilight begins with a gem of the string quartet genre, Schubert’s stormy Quartettsatz in C minor led by former Miro Quartet member, the brilliant violinist Sandy Yamamoto. Richard Strauss’ epic tone poem Don Quixote, about the Spanish noblemen who believes he is a chivalrous knight, follows in an arrangement for sextet. Baltimore Symphony Associate Principal Cello Lachezar Kostov “plays” the hero, and his squire is embodied in the viola by Chicago Lyric Opera Principal Carol Cook. The second half opens with American living composer John Harbison’s evocative Twilight Music for piano, violin and horn featuring SAS Principal Jeff Garza. The program returns to the key of C minor with Gabriel Fauré’s magnificent Piano Quintet No. 2 with SA International Piano Competition Gold Prize winner Scott Cuellar at the keyboard.
