If you’ve ever wanted to experience everything the South Congress, or SoCo, area has to offer in one convenient evening, First Thursdays are definitely a great way to go.

Occurring on the first Thursday of every month (who knew?!), First Thursday takes place along South Congress Avenue between Barton Springs Road and Elizabeth Street where stores and tent-dwelling vendors stay open late, peddle their wares, and cater to all the Austin-ites walking (or stumbling) down the block.

Live music emanates from the street and various SoCo nightlife venues where food and drink specials are aplenty. For all intensive purposes, First Thursday is a big ol’ Austin block party.

If you’re visiting Austin or hosting guests from out of town, First Thursday is a great way to get a concentrated taste of Austin culture, nightlife, shopping and more all in one evening. Visit some of the various tent vendors lining the sidewalk for unique and handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing, art, and more.

They don’t call Austin the live music capital of the world for nothin’. Stop into a SoCo club and catch a great set from a local band or musician while sipping on some discounted drinks in an atmosphere only an Austin club could provide.

Or, just walk the streets, enjoy the sunset, and people watch. Everyone’s walking and there are plenty of street performers who probably wouldn’t mind the gawking. Best of all, it’s free.

First Thursday is a veritable playground for Austin culture and the folks who create it. Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure you’re supporting all the art, music, food, and most importantly, people who make Austin great.

First Thursdays begin around 4 p.m. and last all night. For more information, visit the First Thursday website here.
