So, Wednesday night in Austin, probably not the most happening night of the week, but maybe you’ve been cooped up at work all day and just want something fun and entertaining to do with the friends or family.

Organized by the Alamo Drafthouse and the Austin Parks Foundation, Movies in the Park at Republic Square Park is one of many free events in Austin perfect for all the adults, kids, and (leashed) pets in the family. Bring a blanket, some food and drinks, and you’ll be set for a movie watching experience like no other with hundreds of other Austin-ites right by your side, under the stars.

This Wednesday, May 11th, Movies in the Park will be showing the Coen brother’s 1994 cult classic, The Hudsucker Proxy (PG) starring Tim Robbins and Paul Newman. The film will begin at dusk with pre-show live music by The Minor Mishap Marching Band, “a 35 piece unruly circus-punk-brass band” created by Austin musician, Datri Bean.

If this Wednesday isn’t good for you, there will be another Movies in the Park two weeks later on Wednesday, May 25th. This time they’ll show the uber-weird, but loveable 2004 comedy, Napoleon Dynamite (PG) with a pre-show dance class and contest.

Walking, biking, or using public transportation to get to the park is suggested for anyone who wishes to attend. Parking is available on the street, but might be tough as the event is quite popular.

If you’re looking for an event in Austin boasting the rare attributes of both “fun” and “free”, “Movies in the Park at Republic Square Park is a great bet for Austin-ites and visitors of all ages everywhere.
